  5. Toronto, July 1992... Free source code, and the secrets of indexing
  6. and retrieval for massive databases are offered in a unique
  7. tutorial package by a leading developer of retrieval engines.  The
  8. Mass Indexing and Retrieval (MIR) Tutorials - an interactive
  9. publishing series - have been developed by Douglas Lowry, former
  10. chief scientist of Reteaco Inc.  He has produced some of the
  11. world's most innovative and successful CD-ROM products.

  13. In the seven years since challenging the industry with his trend-
  14. setting FindIt retrieval software, Dr. Lowry has continued to
  15. develop advanced techniques for handling large data indexing and
  16. retrieval problems.  His first high speed, full-text retrieval
  17. system for personal computers had to break many of the supposed
  18. barriers in file size, indices, and ease of use of Boolean logic
  19. and he continues to change the rules.  His current research is on
  20. automating the identification of key words and concepts in any
  21. text; with the addition of several trillion words to computer
  22. databases every year, old methods of having a person read and
  23. describe every piece of text is far too costly and inefficient.  In
  24. the MIR Tutorials, Dr. Lowry shares his knowledge of these and
  25. other advanced techniques.

  27. The tutorials are available as shareware.  The series aims at "open
  28. architecture" sharing and development of software technology. 
  29. Written for programmers and interested information industry
  30. participants, the tutorials include free source code under the Free
  31. Software Foundation GNU Public License.

  33. Dr. Lowry is determined to change the ground rules in information
  34. software development.  "I believe that society is better served by
  35. an economy of sharing rather than one based on secrecy and greed.
  36. We must recognize that the demand today is for a more open
  37. approach," he explains.  "We must enable professionals to
  38. concentrate on the needs of information users.  To do this we have
  39. to change the rules.

  41. "Too much of the development of indexing and retrieval systems is
  42. being done behind closed doors.  If we develop a strong cadre of
  43. people in the industry who reject that secrecy, we can have far
  44. better software.  We can have people sharing ideas, accelerating
  45. improvements.  The alternative is to have the information industry
  46. controlled by a few billion-dollar corporations.  The MIR Tutorials
  47. are simply going to level the playing field," he said.

  49. The Mass Indexing and Retrieval Tutorials consist of five
  50. interactive tutorial sections and a final wrap-up, complete with a
  51. CD-ROM, that will be published at the end of the interactive
  52. process.  Each tutorial includes learning materials on eight or
  53. more topics.  The software tools and source code are available in
  54. DOS and UNIX versions.

  56. Participants are encouraged to communicate with Dr. Lowry as
  57. tutorial instructor through electronic or normal mail and by
  58. facsimile.  "This is a process of sharing.  One of the first things
  59. I learned in teaching at the university level was that more is
  60. learned in open discussions than from one-sided lectures. The final
  61. result of this process of MIR Tutorials will reflect the interests
  62. and insights of many of those who want to further the ability of
  63. people to access and use information," he said.

  65. The MIR Tutorials have been partially funded by the Canadian
  66. government to promote ease of information distribution.  This is in
  67. recognition of the growing awareness that effective distribution
  68. of, and access to, information are keys to economic growth.  There
  69. is a recognized need to break through data glut, and to turn raw
  70. data into corporate intelligence.

  72. Dr. Lowry earned his doctoral degree at the Massachusetts Institute
  73. of Technology.  In 1985 he introduced a high-speed retrieval engine
  74. for full text and statistical data that broke many of the supposed
  75. limitations of personal computers.  One of his first CD-ROM series
  76. was originally 4.5 gigabytes of data which he put on a single disc. 
  77. His highly successful visible indexing interface for CD-ROM is now
  78. used widely in the industry.

  80. Dr. Lowry has been instrumental in the design of leading CD-ROM
  81. series for statistical research, chemical data, journals, books,
  82. directories and multimedia programs.  Many continue to be among the
  83. most sought-after CD-ROM products in the world and discs based on
  84. his designs are sold in the thousands every month.  He also
  85. collaborated in the original design for the award-winning CD-ROM
  86. books from Discis Knowledge Research.

  88. A 65 page introduction to the project was released at the end of
  89. May.  An updated version has been placed on major electronic
  90. bulletin boards (CompuServe, Canada Remote) at the end of June.

  92. MIR Tutorial ONE has been released as shareware ($29 registration)
  93. as of July 1, 1992.  It deals with the problems of database
  94. analysis.  The tutorial provides automated analysis programs and a
  95. discussion of the many problems facing the information provider and
  96. some of the possible solutions.  25 data analysis programs,
  97. complete with source code, were released with Tutorial ONE; the
  98. programs may be used without royalty or payment.  The source code
  99. may be copied, distributed, tinkered with, improved... almost
  100. anything except copyrighted or patented.

  102. The remaining four tutorials follow the same guidelines... low cost
  103. shareware registration for the tutorial text and "copyleft"
  104. programs.  Each successive tutorial will be published when the
  105. there have been 1,000 shareware registrations for the preceding
  106. tutorial.  For example, Tutorial TWO will be released after the
  107. number of registrations for Tutorial ONE passes 1,000.

  109. MIR Tutorial TWO gets the participant involved in the secrets of
  110. how to prepare data for indexing and retrieval.  The various
  111. software programs provide highly useful tools for not only cleaning
  112. up some of the common database problems but greatly accelerating
  113. the process.

  115. MIR Tutorial THREE offers the programs and background on automated
  116. indexing.  Programs such as these used to take many hours to
  117. process on mainframe computers and can today be performed as
  118. routine on high-powered personal computers.

  120. MIR Tutorial FOUR shows in detail how to get split second response
  121. when searching for combinations of words and phrases across massive
  122. sets of data.  The software includes a powerful retrieval engine. 
  123. This tutorial also delves into the concerns and opportunities for
  124. standardizing user interfaces.

  126. Tutorial FIVE examines a wide range of related applications...
  127. records management, archiving, encryption, correlation tools, etc. 
  128. It projects the future in which high powered search is a basic tool
  129. at all levels of society.

  131. The five interactive tutorials will be followed by a compilation of
  132. all the previous releases of text and software, together with new
  133. material jointly developed by Dr. Lowry and participants during the
  134. process.  The accompanying CD-ROM will include software that has
  135. been adapted to work on other computers, further worked examples,
  136. and a compendium of insights and program enhancements from
  137. participants.

  139. Each of the five MIR Tutorials may be registered individually at
  140. $29 per release.  For those who access the files from electronic
  141. bulletin boards, there is no further cost.  Software diskettes,
  142. UNIX system tapes, and paper copies are available by mail order at
  143. moderate prices.
